What is XML/RSS?
I imagine if you are an internet surfer that you have been seeing those little orange XML and RSS buttons more and more. What are they you ask? It is an exciting way to receive news and updates from your favorite sites right to your desktop without even having to go to the website itself! YOU get to decide what parts of the web you want to come to you.
You can use it to get newsfeeds from CNN, BBC or just about anything else, like new movie releases, parenting news, etc.
RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication". After getting past all the technical mumbo jumbo, it is just a fancy way for you to receive CKB-news. You can receive up to the minute updates without having to go to the site every few days to see what's new. It's also a fun way for us to share the happenings in our household that we think you will find amusing or that you can benefit from.
RSS is great because it means no email, no spam and it is VERY easy to unsubscribe and subscribe to. Here's how to get started:
There are two ways to do this:
1) Download free software or
2) Go through My Yahoo! if you do not want to download any new software.
Let's start with the first way. Download a free RSS reader first.
Windows RSS reader -
http://www.rssreader.com
Mac NetNewsWire -
http://www.ranchero.com/netnewswire/
Once you are set up here is all you have to do:
Right click (control click for mac users), on any RSS orange button on a site, blog or news source that interests you. Start by right clicking on the orange RSS button below. Then...
Select Copy Shortcut ("Copy link to clipboard" for Mac), and paste that URL into your RSS Reader. That's it!! You are now subscribed!
Now for the second way for those of you NOT wanting to download any software. Yahoo! has a great way to subscribe to your favorite RSS feeds. Just click on the link below and follow their instructions.
